U.S. Participates in D-Day 73 Commemoration
CARENTAN, France – At the request of the French government and civic leaders in the Normandy region of France, about 400 U.S. troops from units in Europe and the U.S. will participate in more than 40 ceremonial events May 31st to June 7th to commemorate the 73rd anniversary of D-Day, the largest multinational amphibious landing and operational military airdrop in history.
This year, nine U.S. units with historical ties to D-Day on June 6, 1944, will commemorate D-Day 73 in 27 French communities – including Sainte Mere Eglise, Carentan, Picauville and Montebourg.
On June 4, more than 350 French, U.S. and German military and civilian members will participate in a multinational D-Day remembrance airborne operation.
Seventy-three years later, the bravery and heroism by all Allies on D-Day continue to resonate with U.S. forces in Europe – who remain steadfast in their commitment to European allies and partners.
To facilitate U.S. support of D-Day 73, U.S. European Command has established Joint Task Force Normandy 73. As part of this joint task force, the D-Day 73 Media Operations Center is open from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm in the Hotel de Ville (City Hall), Boulevard de Verdun, 50500 Carentan.
